
If a tree falls in the woods, does it still make a sound? The proverbial tree is in the process of falling in Antarctica. As much as global warming does seem to be a media-fed event, happenings such as this seem to defy that popular opinion.
A large section of this ice shelf (approx. 400 sq. km.), according to Matthias Braun, has already been cast adrift by warming temperatures. This happened starting on February 28, after Braun made the observation from a Japanese ALOS sensor.
Current theories lead experts to believe that the Peninsula ice shelfs are losing mass on the bottom of the ice sheets as well due to a rising ocean temp. This will lead to further fragility of the ice sheet and promote the future separation of the ice shelves from the land mass.
